Is Wine Good For You?

red wine in a glass

The general consensus it seems is that moderate drinking does actually protect against heart disease. When we say moderately, we mean about one or two units a day. Bear in mind that women shouldn't really have more than 14 a week and men no more than 21. However drinking one or two units a day is actually only recommended for men over 40 and post-menopausal women. So it's quite acceptable for you to pick up a bottle or two for the week when you are doing your shop at Marks and Spencer or wherever you go. It's not good for your health to be drinking a bottle or more a night all to yourself. The British Heart Foundation says that more than two units a day is harmful to you

As of yet there has been no evidence that drinking wine, or other alcohol, is of any benefit to younger people. Remember though at a young age you are much less prone to heart disease than someone older. It doesn't mean that you can't drink at all as you age however. In fact you may be pleased to hear that wine contains several antioxidants. In particular, red wine has quercetin and resveratrol, which both help prevent heart disease and cancer.

It is thought that the darker the glass of red you drink, the more antioxidants the wine will have in it. Tests have shown that wine with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes have the most polyphenols. If you want to be health conscious, try and find wine with this grape when you're shopping online at Marks and Spencer  or at the local supermarket. Other wines high in antioxidants include merlot, zinfandel, syrah and petit syrah.

And what about white wines? Well they don't have as many health benefits, but unless you already suffer from health problems a unit or two a day is unlikely to harm you. Whenever you drink though, you should be aware of the risks and understand the dangers which can lead to heart disorders and high blood pressure. Drink responsibly and you can make the most of all the great wines on the market.
