Let the Sun Shine In

girl rubbing cream on cheek

Rain or shine, bare legs or back into tights again (and that’s just the kids!), MumKnowsBest is thinking sunny side up. Keeping in mind that smell can have such a powerful effect on our mood, we’ve taken our pick of the top-to-toe beauty treats with the most uplifting, beachy, shamelessly summery scents. Whatever the weather, dive in and capture the spirit of hotter days ahead ….

Like washing sunshine into your hair, using a super-nourishing, summery-smelling shampoo and conditioner will give your tresses and your spirits a lift. As fabulously moisturising and softening as it is deliciously scented, the MOROCCANOIL range of haircare products is available at selected salons nationwide. We especially love the Intense Hydrating Mask (£23.35 for 250ml) and Intense Curl Cream (£22.35 for 300ml) – great for coaxing unruly curls into defined, gleaming submission (Moroccanoil is stocked in over 2000 upmarket salons so check with your hairdresser or for info and stockists, call 01296 620555).

Look out, too, for TIGI’s made-for-summer new Love, Peace and the Planet Walking On Sunshine Ginger Mandarin Lime Daily Shine Shampoo and Conditioner (£9.95 each), which combine a zingy fragrance with hydrating organic jojoba and sweet almond oils and aloe vera. Meanwhile, great for mums on the run (and for any family camping breaks to come!), Batiste’s brilliant Dry Shampoo in Boho (£1.49 for the new 50 ml, handbag-sized can) blends ‘top notes’ of lemon, orange and passionflower with a warm heart of jasmine, lily and heliotrope. Who knew shampoo could be so sophisticated? …

Turn a three minute shower (or evening soak, when you get the chance) into a tropical getaway with a yummily summery bath and body wash. A great budget buy, The Pink Cow’s Coconut Crème Bath & Shower Gel (£2.99, at Boots and www.boots.com) produces a lovely light, beachy-smelling foam. Similarly, we love Naked’s Ooh La La Coco De Mer Body Wash (£3.91, also at Boots and www.boots.com), inspired by ‘hot, steamy, tropical nights’. Follow your shower or bath with lashings of The Body Shop’s Cocoa Butter Hand & Body Lotion (from £8) – a summer classic – or Organic Surge’s Tropical Bergamot Body Lotion (£4.99, at Waitrose and www.organicsurge.com).

Make pasty-looking skin more bare-able whilst imagining you’re on a white, sandy beach on a faraway island (even if you’re in a tiny bathroom, with small people looking at you). We love the smell of Estée Lauder’s new Bronze Goddess Suncare Collection, which includes a Golden Perfection Self-Tanning Milk, Tinted Gelée or Spray for Body (£20.50 each). Sprays are great for getting you out of the door in a flash – just spray and go (or glow), if perhaps for the more confident about even application. Alternatively, build up colour gradually with the yummy-smelling, very reliable Palmer’s Natural Bronze Gradual Tanning Moisturizer (£4.99). Or, for a wash-off tint that will transport you straight to a sunlounger on the beach of your choice (in your mind, anyway), try Laura Mercier’s Body Bronzing Makeup.

Spray on summer, instantly, with a sunny fragrance. Elemis’ first fragrance, Elemis Eau de Parfum (£35) makes its debut this month. Light and super-fresh, it cleverly combines marine and floral notes and comes in a small, chic glass bottle (at Debenhams, John Lewis, House of Fraser, Harvey Nichols and at www.timetospa.co.uk). When you’re next in Monsoon, try a spritz of Monsoon Elation (from £15, 30 ml), a seasonal mix of uplifting citrus and richer floral notes, including freesia. Time to dig out that floppy sunhat …
