BBC's Hairy Bikers

Another day holed up in arctic conditions, kids in bed, cheese on toast (not quite one of my five a day intake, but it's tasty!) and flicking through the channels, I come across another Mumknowsbest - except this time it's two blokes on motorbikes proclaiming to be the Hairy Bikers. I watched with interest as mouthwatering, homecooked, generations of hand-me-down recipes blipped onto the screen. Who were these guys and how good was Mums Know Best to them?

To the converted followers of the Hairy Bikers, they are Simon King and David Myers both with a passion for food. In this current series (BBC2 Tuesday nights at 8.00pm) The Hairy Bikers: Mums Know Best, is a six-part series celebrating the history of family recipes. The two Bikers are on a hunt to search for the nation's lost recipes which have been handed down through the generations. In every family lives that 'recipe' for tea cake, flapjack or stew or some other mouthwatering delight. My grandma made the most delicious tea bread, the recipe for which was scribbled down for me by my own mother - three generations of cake eaters!

But the Hairy Bikers seem to be on more of a mission than simply tracing old recipe trees. As I watched the show, I felt drawn to the seemingly old-fashioned way these people had gathered at fetes and 'village fair' - like events to share their recipe treats. It was a real draw back into childhood for me. Cooking and eating is a valuable life lesson especially when shared with a family. It's one of the domestic 'chores' that we can all take part in without pressure or prejudice.

When did we lose the pleasure of simple cooking without the need to compete as a perfect cook in our kitchens? I've rediscovered garlic in jar as I love the stuff but hate, hate, hate chopping the slippery things. Cooking can and should be a real pleasure once you get over the time and the guilt factor. Some of my family meals are ready made, some are prepared from scratch and yes, the cheese on toasts are plentiful and delicious. I have days where not even one of the five a day ingredients appears on the family plates - does that make me a bad mum or an undomestic goddess? No, it makes me normal.

I have plenty food issues when it comes to losing that endless 'baby weight' so I'm done with food issues surrounding my pots and pans!

Hairy Bikers, I salute you as somewhere, deep down, we mums know that mum really does know best!

I'm a fan of theirs as well

I'm a fan of theirs as well and I love you don't need debt solutions to follow their ideas unlike some of the chefs. I'm from the north east myself so I may be a little biased! Rachel from puppy potty training & piano tutorial
